WildlifeNL is an eight-year research initiative (2023-2030) aimed at fostering coexistence between humans and wildlife in the Netherlands, where large mammals are increasingly returning to the landscape. The project addresses the growing tensions arising from interactions between humans and wildlife, as populations of species such as wild boars, deer, and reintroduced animals like beavers and otters expand. Notably, apex predators like wolves and wildcats are also reestablishing themselves in the region.

Recognizing that traditional wildlife management often overlooks the complex communication between species, WildlifeNL proposes a paradigm shift that integrates humans as integral components of nature. The project seeks to develop innovative wildlife management strategies by combining insights from social sciences, philosophy, ecology, and technology. This collaborative approach involves stakeholders in creating and testing new technologies, governance frameworks, and communication strategies in "Living Labs." The ultimate goal is to influence the behaviors of both wildlife and humans to enable a conflict-free coexistence, contributing to a nature-inclusive society where sustainable interactions between people and wildlife are realized. The initiative is supported by a diverse consortium of researchers and societal partners, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing contemporary wildlife management challenges.
